An historic Manor House with a dedicated science laboratory and art studio!   At some time an office for the visiting faculty, more recently a place in which art classes were held (hence the name Studio Lab), the main room has been fitted out as a purpose-built lab with the smaller area used for the secure storage of chemicals.  There are sinks, working surfaces, a fume cabinet, some rather trendy stools and lots of storage for equipment  -  even a unit for coats and bags  -  but no Bunsen burners.  Those days are, apparently, gone.

We have to thank two faculty from Spring 2006 for the original concept and design, and for the vision to see the possibilities offered by this seemingly unpromising space.  Professor Bob Eierman from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and Professor Brian Ernsting from the University of Evansville put together plans and suggestions for creating a lab that would be appropriate for the teaching of both Chemistry and Biology.  They truly are our architects. 

The project was put together by a company specalising in lab design and supply for educational institutions, Scientific Laboratory Supplies Ltd.  Chris and our Maintenance team did the preliminary  - and messy  - work, clearing out the old fittings, installing a water supply and heating, redecorating, and the rest.  During this process they discovered a new room!  Not all went according to plan.  Does it ever, in a building like Harlaxton?  The flooring we had in mind turned out not to be suitable, but the original flagstones, carefully cleaned, are looking good.
