The Harlaxton College Library collections are for the use of members of the College community, and external readers by prior appointment. The Main Library occupies three rooms in the North Wing of the Manor and has around 40 study spaces. Most classroom areas are available for group study after 5pm and at weekends. The Library uses the ALICE for Windows automated system [AfW] to catalogue books, videotapes, DVDs and recorded music, and for circulation.
Please contact the Library staff if you need help or advice, or if you are having difficulty in finding the information you need. We welcome suggestions for improvement of the services offered.
A Library of this size can function efficiently only if all users co-operate. Rules are few – please observe them, as they are for the benefit of everyone. Specific information is given in this booklet, but we urge you to consult with us if any points need clarification or if we can be of help in any way.
All books except Reference and Reserve items are available for loan. Books should be checked out at the Issue Desk. The normal loan period is 10 days, renewable provided that the book is not required by another user. We reserve the right to recall items needed for use on Reserve – please return these books immediately.
Fines should have no place in a small College Library. Help us to avoid them by returning all books within the loan period or renewing the loan.
Please return all books to the Issue Desk and ensure that the loan is cancelled. Do not pass books on to friends – the loan will remain your responsibility.
Lost books should be reported to the Library staff immediately.
Periodicals and reference books are to be used only in the Library area and the adjacent study areas. Most reference books are located in the Reception area of the Library, and are clearly marked.
Faculty frequently place on Reserve any items which are likely to be in heavy demand. Please ask at the Issue Desk for access to these books, which are to be used only in the Library
For information on our periodical holdings and the location of individual items, please see the Periodicals page in the Library Information Booklet (available at the Issue Desk).
Please note that access to periodical literature is mainly via online databases.
We encourage use of College holdings of DVDs, videos, recorded music, slides and equipment for class presentations and for your own enjoyment. Please note that we respect all copyright restrictions.
Bookings for video and DVD players and multi-media projectors should be made with Library staff.
Photocopy facilities are available in an area close to the Library. The College is registered with the Copyright Licensing Agency, and we ask all users to follow the guidelines displayed next to the Photocopiers.

One way to become involved in the local community is to use British libraries. Most welcome your visits, provided of course that you respect their regulations and procedures. Some require advance notice of your visit – please check with the Library staff. We will be happy to make arrangements.
Located in the Isaac Newton Centre, this is a local public library with a good range of stock. If you wish to join the Library, take along your ID card and ask at their Issue Counter.
The University Library at Nottingham offers reading, but not borrowing, facilities to Harlaxton students and faculty. The College runs 2 visits to the University Library each semester. Please check with the staff if you wish to visit these Libraries on a group or individual basis.

The Harlaxton Library belongs to the Lending Division of the British Library and the staff will arrange Inter-library loans. Funding for this facility is limited. To ensure a fair service to all users, we reserve the right to pass on part or all of the cost to anyone making extensive use of Inter-library loans.
You are welcome to bring laptops into the Library to take full advantage of the wireless facility in the area.
As well as the two Computer Labs, there are workstations with Internet access for academic research, together with printers, situated in the Reception and Main Hall areas of the Library. You should be able to access all of your favourite websites, and discover some unfamiliar sites with a “British flavour”. Remember that you also have access to many of the online databases to which the University of Evansville Libraries subscribe. We particularly recommend:
but would encourage you to visit the UE Libraries pages, and explore the resources available.
We also recommend INFOTRAC for full-text journal articles and the Times Digital Archive for comprehensive access to the contents of The Times newspaper from 1785-1985.
