Accommodation

Accommodation

The accommodation at Harlaxton College is dormitory style with most students housed in twin or triple bedded rooms. Bathroom facilities are shared and like our housing in generalare maintained to a high standard.

You will be housed in either the Manor or the Carriage House and, as with any university housing, our housing locations offer different atmospheres, even differing by floor, and are dependent upon the student body of each particular semester.

Both the Manor and Carriage House have a television lounge, a computer lab, full wireless network access, snack machines, pay phones, campus phones, refrigerators/kitchenettes and laundry services.

The following galley offers some pictures of our facilities.

Online Housing Form

All students complete an online housing form when registering which assists us in matching students with roommates.  While we aim to create good roommate matches, please understand that all successful relationships take time and effort. Be honest when you fill out your housing form.  If you like to go to sleep early and sleep-in late, tell us.  If you are really unorganized, that is okay – just don’t ask for a roommate that is organized!.

With a variety of universities attending Harlaxton, we emphasize the importance of open communication and mutual respect regarding roommates.  It is never easy to share personal space and this completely new atmosphere can affect your “normal way of living”…and then throw in people you’ve never met before!? The Student Affairs staff is always available to discuss any concerns related to housing.

Be honest.  Be flexible.  Be open to new experiences.  The friendships you make while at Harlaxton can be very important.  After all, how often will you study abroad and live in an English manor or carriage house?

Room Assignments

The Dean of Students is responsible for all housing matters, including room assignments.  Roommates will be assigned based on information received from your online housing form.

Harlaxton is not only an opportunity to study and travel abroad, but also to meet different people within and without the College.  For this reason, students are often housed with students from different universities.   Roommate requests are rarely, if ever, granted.  Room assignments are not published until students arrive on campus.

Resident Assistants Spring 2006Resident Assistants

As in other American universities, Harlaxton College employs a staff of Resident Assistants.

Every semester, the Student Affairs Office looks for energetic and caring students to join our Resident Assistant staff.

RAs are usually the first people to be sought out when a student wishes to express concern or ask questions.  Harlaxton RAs support the Student Affairs Office in a variety of areas and report directly to the Dean of Students.  The position and responsibilities are comparable to those of RAs in other American universities.

If you are interested in being a Harlaxton RA, here are a few things to be aware of:

  • RAs are chosen at the beginning of each semester.  Applications are available during the first weekend or you may make an application online before arrival. Please email all completed applications directly to the Dean of Students - Matt Andrzejewski (mandrzej@harlaxton.ac.uk).
  • Previous housing experience helps, but is not required.
  • You will need to bring one to three letters of recommendation with you, or you can ask your references to email their recommendations directly to me.  Letters of recommendation are not required, but can help support your application.
  • RAs are expected to be “on duty” for approximately 14-16 evenings during the semester (5pm – 9am) and 1-2 weekends per semester.  This schedule is sorted soon after the selection process between the RA staff and me.
  • An RA will live in an area with 20-30 students and work on a staff consisting of 6-8 RAs (this is all dependent upon student numbers).  They are also responsible for some programming on their floors consisting of a social programme and an educational programme.  They assist with end-of-semester procedures, as well.
  • As an RA, you’ll be responsible for organizing the Costume Ball Date Auction.  This is an event that raises money for a charity chosen by the RA staff.  It is truly one of the highlights of the semester for student life!
  • Remuneration includes a small stipend and a single room.

If you have any questions, please contact the Dean of Students (mandrzej@harlaxton.ac.uk).
